All vehicle rentals with Car Hire are governed by a comprehensive Rental Agreement, which you will receive upon booking confirmation or vehicle pickup. This agreement outlines the specific terms, conditions, insurance coverage, associated charges, and your responsibilities linked to the rental. In the event of any discrepancies between these Terms and the Rental Agreement, the latter will prevail.
Eligibility Criteria
Vehicle Rental Requirements
- To rent a vehicle from Car Hire in Alton, you must be at least 21 years old, although age restrictions may vary depending on the vehicle type. Drivers under 25 may incur additional fees. You are required to possess a valid driving license suitable for the vehicle category, held for the minimum duration outlined in the Rental Agreement. Valid identification and proof of your current address must be provided, along with accepted payment information and a security deposit. Booking and Payments Process
- Reservations can be made via our website, over the phone, or in person at our Alton office. A deposit may be necessary to confirm your booking. The remaining payment and security deposit are generally required at the time of vehicle pickup. All prices are listed in British Pounds (£) and include VAT where applicable. We accept major credit and debit cards, ensuring secure transactions through trusted payment providers.
4. Vehicle Pickup and Drop-off
- At the time of collection, you are required to conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle and report any pre-existing damage without delay. A vehicle condition report will be completed and both parties will sign it. You must return the vehicle in the same condition as it was collected, accounting for normal wear and tear. Any new damage will be evaluated and charged as appropriate. The vehicle should also be returned with the same fuel level as at collection; refueling fees will apply if it is returned with less fuel. Late returns may incur additional charges, so please notify us as soon as possible if a delay is anticipated. You will be accountable for any parking fines, traffic violations, or other charges incurred during the rental period, along with an administration fee.
Insurance and Responsibility
- All car rentals from Alton include basic third-party insurance. You can find comprehensive details about coverage and excess amounts in your Rental Agreement. Additional insurance options may be available to limit your financial responsibility. Review these options closely, as you are liable for any damage or loss up to the excess amount unless further insurance is purchased. Damage resulting from negligence or misuse remains your responsibility, regardless of any insurance in place.
Cancellation and Modifications

Prohibited Activities
Prohibited Uses of Rental Vehicle
- The vehicle must not be used for any illegal activities or in a manner that poses a risk, such as racing, rallying, or off-roading. Transporting hazardous materials is prohibited. Sub-letting the vehicle or allowing unauthorized drivers is not allowed. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly forbidden, as is exceeding weight or passenger limits. Additionally, driving outside the agreed geographical boundaries without prior authorization is not permitted.
Breach of these terms may lead to rental cancellation and fees.
Liability Limitations
To the fullest extent allowed under English and Welsh law, Car Hire Alton will not be responsible for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including loss of profits or data, resulting from your use of our services. Our liability for any claims will be limited to the amount you paid for the rental in the previous 12 months. This limitation does not apply to liability for death or personal injury resulting from negligence or fraud.
